Effects of movies on youth
Movies may significantly influence gender and ethnic stereotypes, alter attitudes toward particular groups of people and elicit newly formed opinions about a variety of issues. Movies serve as powerful media for education, information, and enjoyment, helping to build the opinions of different social groups.
We are all aware of the fact that movies are powerful means to influence people. But the influence movies have had on young people is greater than all of us may have realized. We cannot deny that entertainment forms an important part of our lives, and movies have played an integral part in it. We can debate about films’ influence on society, particularly its negative effects on our young people, but movies have done far more good things for our children than we credit to them.
People criticizing those kinds of movies, whether intentionally or not, often overlook the importance given education nowadays to those films, for young generations to take inspiration from. Young people are growing up, therefore, they need to get all positives out of movies and keep the negatives in themselves. Some family films provide so much morality for the young, but the people who only watch them, are affected for some time, and they forget about morals once the film is over.
The vulgarity in films has a bad influence on the minds of younger generations and children in our society. If we are making movies like addictions and absorbing all negatives out of them, then this could prove to be bad for the younger generations. We need to let the rest. Young people need to be educated and aware of what is good or not. Some films can be a life-changing experience which helps the depressed individual understand suicide is not an answer. Films such as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or Mary Kom inspire many youths to seriously pursue fitness.
Attending youth student cinema festivals could be instrumental to this process, and often, we underestimate how much impact movies have on the community, or younger students specifically. In particular, differences in attitudes before seeing the movie are likely to cause differences in the impact of the film. Even with the help of this research, we cannot definitively say whether the film has a positive or negative effect on everyone’s mind, because based on people’s attitudes, responses to watching the movie may vary between a positive and a negative effect.
By finding out about attitudes, we may understand whether the liking or disliking of watching movies has something to do with whether it affects them positively or negatively. People watch movies for a variety of individual reasons, but no matter what their reasons are, watching movies has an effect on their minds, both on the conscious and subconscious levels. Cognitive neuroscience studies show that certain movies are capable of exercising considerable control of brain activity and eye movements, and thus, in addition to their effects on the economy, society, politics, rationalism, and more, movies also exert an enormous influence on the psychology of individuals.
For instance, films with depictions of HIV promote empathy towards those living with HIV, television shows featuring transgender characters promote a positive view of transgender individuals; depictions of mental disorders in films influence people’s knowledge and attitudes toward mental illness. I think that if you are affected by a film, maybe you should speak to somebody about it. Not only do movies have an impact on people, but actors/actresses also have an impact on people. You can generally tell when someone is affected by a movie that they are acting kinda crazy, or even weird at times.
Even young people from rural areas are affected so heavily by movies they put the heroes in movies into very embedded parts of their minds. There are films like BAGHBAN, which is a family movie, which makes us study it very well. The films now are more action, thriller, romantic, heist, etc. The youngsters try to emulate everything present in the movies, and it shows up in their dressing styles, driving, talking styles, etc. People begin imagining themselves in the plots of these films. When teens are watching comedic films, they are going to feel happy and their smiles are printed on their faces better, it shows how films affect people’s moods and how they bring fun to teens and others.
Teenagers want a nice break from their daily routines and movies can fulfill that role helping them entertain themselves and feel cooler for a while. Movies teach teens a lot of behavioural lessons that change how they see themselves, movies can help students to learn a second language and improve their levels. Movies are often young people’s first view of the real world, forming their judgements, values, and opinions on how our society works, although sometimes, they may be misleading.
I do not know how much influence movies have had or have had on many, but almost certainly every person has been somewhat influenced by a film they have seen. The data from Table 2 and Figure 1 indicate that most people across all sexes, age groups, and types of viewers had neutral effects from movies. That is, they felt movies did not affect them either positively or negatively. The data also show that people who are not frequent viewers of films and most people in age groups over 40 perceive movies to have negative effects on them.
The revealed contrary trends may be explained by the respondent’s differences, which included their age, education level, which is a proxy for the individual’s psychological characteristics, their experiences of interactions with older adults, and consequently, their attitudes toward older adults in the period before watching a particular selected movie.
Movies are a popular form of entertainment among youth, and
they have a significant impact on their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour.
While some movies can have positive effects on youth, others can have negative
effects. In this article, we will discuss some of the effects of movies on
youth.
- Influence
on behaviour
Movies can influence youth behaviour by portraying certain behaviours
as acceptable or desirable. Research shows that youth who are exposed to
violent movies are more likely to engage in aggressive behaviour. Furthermore,
youth who are exposed to movies that depict smoking, drinking, or drug use are
more likely to engage in these behaviours themselves.
- Impact
on attitudes and beliefs
Movies can also impact youth attitudes and beliefs. For
example, movies that depict stereotypical gender roles can reinforce
traditional gender roles in young people's minds. Additionally, movies that
portray certain groups negatively, such as racial or ethnic minorities, can
lead to negative attitudes and beliefs about these groups.
- Emotional
impact
Movies can also have an emotional impact on youth. Movies
that depict violent or traumatic events can lead to anxiety, fear, and distress
in young people. Similarly, movies that depict romantic relationships can lead
to unrealistic expectations of love and relationships.
- Educational
impact
Movies can also have a positive educational impact on youth.
Movies that depict historical events, scientific concepts, or cultural
traditions can help young people learn about the world around them.
Additionally, movies that feature strong role models can inspire youth to
achieve their goals and make positive changes in their lives.
- Impact
on body image
Movies can also impact youth's body image. Movies that
depict unrealistic body standards can lead to negative body image and body
dissatisfaction. This can lead to unhealthy behaviours such as disordered
eating and excessive exercise.
- Impact
on values
Finally, movies can impact youth's values. Movies that
promote materialism and consumerism can lead to youth placing too much emphasis
on material possessions. Additionally, movies that promote individualism over
community values can lead to youth placing their own needs and desires above
those of the community.
In conclusion, movies can have both positive and negative
effects on youth. It is essential to consider the messages that movies are
sending to young people and to educate them about critical thinking and media
literacy. Parents and educators can help young people develop healthy media
habits by monitoring their movie consumption and discussing the messages that
movies are sending. By understanding the effects of movies on youth, we can
work towards creating a media landscape that supports young people's growth and
development.
