How Movies Shape Our Future Vision of Technology
How Movies Shape Our Future Vision of Technology
This is one of the first questions I asked students in
college, as I taught new media technologies, robotics, and storytelling in
film. Over time, I have developed more appreciation for sci-fi stories that echo
the direct realities of our world -- movies like the Robot mentioned earlier,
and Frank & His.
While the movie industry has been showing us visions of the
future for decades, only recently has reality and fiction begun to merge. From
hovercrafts, jetpacks, and drones, to augmented reality, AI, and space
exploration; science fiction movies have been anticipating future technology
breakthroughs and mind-blowing scientific inventions for ages. The sci-fi genre
is known for breaking new ground, its lenses are so often keenly focused on
what the future might hold, and with so many predictions floating around, we
wanted to hear if you thought we missed out on any of the great science fiction
film technological predictions.
What is more exciting is that, in addition to being
entertaining, sci-fi movies provide us with scenarios to think about what sort
of world (or planet, given the state of space exploration) we would like in the
future, and how to get there. Science fiction can also be used to keep the
worst from happening, presenting possible challenges and problems in the future
that present-day decision-makers choose to ignore, usually because they lack
long-term vision. For the moment, science fiction is the closest thing we have
to a time machine, as it takes us into different futures, where we can see
risks without having to experience these cataclysmic scenarios.
We do not need to go far into the future to contemplate the
idea of life becoming more and more intertwined with artificial technologies. Malus’s
movie takes a look at the ongoing developments in sensor technology and the
design of intelligent devices, as well as envisioning how these
technoscientific applications might affect our everyday lives in the future.
Like the first movie, Malu, Quantified Love also draws upon existing
technoscientific applications and imagines how such applications might affect
us in the not-too-distant future.
From the second, more analytical perspective, the movie malu is not just invented sci-fi, it is grounded primarily on existing technoscientific applications projected into the very near future. From Lumia Re’s brother’s early projections to the current graphically generated computer films, the industry has not stopped innovating to produce better films. Hollywood has already made moves toward the integration of cutting-edge technologies in Hollywood.
Unfortunately, some directors, such as Quentin Tarantino have
learned that because these new technologies are being introduced to the
industry, the works of certain directors are no longer available for them to
make a profit. We can hope for the best, and learn to accept that the new
technologies entering Hollywood will make for exciting, new projects, and that
will emphasize the wonderful weirdness of what is new. The more we can learn to
read movies in the same way that we can analyze texts, the better we will be at
reflecting on their effect on us.
Movies
have always been a powerful medium for storytelling and entertainment. They
allow us to escape into worlds beyond our own and experience things that we
might not be able to in real life. One of the ways that movies have had a
significant impact on our society is by shaping our future vision of
technology. In this essay, we will explore how movies have influenced our
perception of technology and how they have shaped our vision of the future.
Movies
have long been a source of inspiration for technological innovation. From the
iconic communicators in Star Trek to the artificial intelligence systems in
2001: A Space Odyssey, movies have introduced us to countless technological
advancements that have inspired real-life innovations. These movies have not
only provided a glimpse into what the future might hold but have also
challenged us to think about the possibilities and limitations of technology.
One
of the most significant ways that movies have influenced our vision of
technology is by presenting us with idealized versions of the future. Movies
like The Jetsons and Back to the Future have presented us with a future that is
bright, shiny, and full of technological wonders. These movies have inspired us
to dream big and to strive for a future that is full of technological
advancements that make our lives easier and more enjoyable.
However,
movies have also presented us with dystopian visions of the future, where
technology has gone awry and caused more harm than good. Movies like The
Terminator and The Matrix have presented us with a future where machines have
become self-aware and have turned against humanity. These movies have cautioned
us to be mindful of the potential dangers of technology and to use it
responsibly.
Movies
have also influenced our perception of technology by shaping the way we
interact with it. Movies like Minority Report and Iron Man have presented us
with futuristic user interfaces that have inspired the development of real-life
technologies such as touch screens and voice-controlled devices. These movies
have changed the way we think about technology, encouraging us to interact with
it in more natural and intuitive ways.
Another
significant way that movies have influenced our perception of technology is by
shaping our expectations of what is possible. Movies like The Matrix and
Inception have presented us with mind-bending technologies that challenge our
understanding of reality. While these technologies may not be possible in real
life, they have encouraged us to think outside the box and to consider new and
innovative ways of using technology.
In
conclusion, movies have had a significant impact on our future vision of
technology. They have presented us with idealized and dystopian visions of the
future, challenged our understanding of what is possible, and influenced the
way we interact with technology. As we continue to develop new technologies and
explore new frontiers, it is important to remember that the movies we watch
today may shape the future we create tomorrow. By being mindful of the lessons
we learn from these movies, we can ensure that we use technology responsibly and beneficially and that the future we create is one that we
can be proud of.
